The risks of fitting your own car battery

Mistakes can often be made when changing your own car battery.

Car batteries can generally last for five years provided they are given proper maintenance. Its longevity is however also dependent on other factors such as the climate, the vehicles operation, how you use your vehicle (start regularity & distance travelled). Overcharging or undercharging the battery can also cause premature failure.

Before you consider doing it yourself, think of the following :

Do I have the necessary safety gear ?

Am i strong enough to lift the battery out and a new on in ?

Am I technically savvy to complete this ?

Do I have the necessary tools and devices ?

Am i prepared to accept the consequences if things go wrong ?

Is it just easier to get it done by the experts ?

Firstly, using a voltmeter, test the battery voltage, then start the car and test that the alternator is charging the battery correctly. Often people replace a battery due to a faulty alternator. If you have decided that it is your battery, then ensure you have a memory minder that ensures your vehicle retains its electronics and data before removing the old battery. The biggest risk with changing over a car battery is when trying to disconnect the dead battery in the wrong order. Before changing your car battery, you should ensure that the new battery you are replacing it with is fully charged. Then start with disconnecting the negative cable first followed by the positive cable. Undo any of the hold down clamps/brackets and ensure they are well clear of the battery terminals to avoid an accidental short. Be very careful not to drop or misplace the nuts. Lift the dead battery by removing it in an upright position. This is to prevent its acidic solution from leaking out. Respect the weight of the product when lifting as often its in an awkward position and can easily cause an injury to your back or hands. Place the old battery in a safe place to avoid contact with acid residue. You can then place the new battery at the position of the former one.

Whether it’s a car, boat, motorbike, tractor, or bus you must make sure you are looking after the battery in it even when it’s not in use. If you have a flooded lead acid battery or an absorbed glass matt (AGM) they are both lead acid batteries, and you will need to keep a closer eye on them to get the longest life out of them. Lead acid batteries self-discharge much faster compared to a lithium-ion phosphate (LiFePo4) or lithium ferro phosphate (LFP). A typical lithium-ion battery can be stored without a top up charge for years and still pull it out and use it just fine without doing any damage to it. A lead acid battery of any kind should be kept top up and fully charged to avoid sulphation and stratification. If you cannot have a solar panel on it all the time or a trickle charger you should charge the battery at least once a fortnight. Make sure to keep the battery in a cool dry place if possible as it is battery for the battery’s health overall. Installing a basic volt meter can help to keep track of a battery’s state of charge (SOC). They are simple, easy to install and have drain on the battery.

How Long Should a Car Battery Last?

Technology is advancing at a faster and faster rate, and it can be hard to know if you are getting the most out of your car battery. Most batteries should last much longer than their warranty period. Like most products, the better quality the battery you buy, the longer it will last well after its warranty period is over. Even though most batteries look the same on the outside they are all different on the inside. A battery is not just a battery.

Nearly all car batteries these days are maintenance free and use lead additives such as Antimony, Calcium and Tin combined with a sulfuric based electrolyte solution. Cell construction, plate thickness and type, acid volume, internal design and choice of active materials make a world of difference between having a battery that fails before its time or having a battery that lasts longer.

Making sure that you have the right size battery in your car can help too. If your car battery is too small for the car it will generally fail prematurely. Battery warranty generally indicates the quality so the higher the warranty term then better the battery. As an example, if the cheapest battery for your car starts at $120 with a 12 month warranty, then normally eac quality step up costs you around $20 more. So a 24 month warranty will be $140 and 36 month $160. Now do the maths purely based on the warranty life. The best battery in this example is $160 divided by 3 means that its costing you around $53 per year versus $70 for a 24 month and so on. Not a lot of money when you think it starts your car on average three times a day and powers your electrics. Also not much when you think about how much petrol costs you on a weekly basis !

In this day and with so many types of batteries it is hard to know how to properly take care of your car battery.

Firstly, if you use your vehicle infrequently (particularly your classic weekender car, leisure motorbikes, boats, etc) its best to keep your battery fully charged using a basic trickle charger. A small investment to ensure your battery lasts the full distance. This will help reduce sulphation under long periods of discharge and undercharging.

Try never to run your battery down below 12 volts. If have a car and no battery charger, you may get away with driving it for a minimum 40-minutes every fortnight but this is not ideal. If your battery is a maintainable battery (most are sealed maintenance free these days), be sure to regularly check the electrolyte levels. Not enough electrolyte can cause irreparable damage and if even one cell in the battery was to run dry it would cause the battery to stop working.

Even at the end of your batteries’ life you need to take care and recycle it. Did you know a lead acid battery is 98% recyclable ? 98% of the materials used in a lead acid battery are recyclable, so make sure your old scrap battery does not end up on the side of the road or in the landfill and bring them to QLD Discount Batteries.
